According to the World Health Organization each year approximately one million people die from suicide.
This estimation represents a global mortality of 16 people per 100,000 or one death every 40 seconds. Ghana records about 1,500 cases annually of suicide cases according to the mental health authority
According to a medical practitioner Dr. Livingstone Kpotosu, people who commit suicide feel hopeless, hurting so badly, guilt and pain of which they want to end of which they can’t imagine every going away. Usually people who commit suicide do not see light at the end of the tunnel.
He also added that” people who commit suicide have negative thoughts about their circumstances or even about themselves they can’t find reason to live. They think their problems are unsolvable and they fell totally out of control”.
Further on he added that people who commit suicide have a thought in mind that no one can help them solve a particular problem or event. Also they fell immobilized and unable to solve a problem and worthless with a sense of personal failure.
He also stated that suicide does not affect only the dead person but close friends and family as well. These persons feel guilt devastation regret among others for not being there and not paying attention to notice suicidal behaviors of their loved one. It takes days, weeks, months or even years to forget the sad event.
He advised that friends and family to pay close attention to their loved once talk about suicide, wanting to die or disappearing even in a joking manner, the conversation must be taken seriously. Talking about it would not kill the person but rather brushing it off would. One you know a person’s thought you may be of help in avoiding it.
“Many people who have suicidal thoughts have medical conditions that can be successfully treated. This could be as a result of depression, substance abuse or domestic abuse which can be treated” he added.
He concluded saying “it is important to seek for help when suicidal thought occur because medical treatments are usually successful in diminishing the thoughts”.
