Barely few weeks ago, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ended its sixth ‘Unity Walk’ in Somanya in the Eastern Region and in the coming weeks the party is expected to organise its seventh (7th) edition of the walk in Wa in the Upper West Region, which is scheduled for Saturday March 24, 2018.

The ‘Unity Walk’ is aimed at closing the ranks of the umbrella family and building bridges that were broken in the party before and during the 2016 electioneering.

Reports gathered from the organisers indicates that the former President John Mahama will lead the Unity Walk in Wa with his former appointees.

John Mahama has not declared his intention about leading the party in the 2020 general elections but insiders believe the walk and other moves being made by the former President are indications of a desire to hold on to the party’s leadership.

So far majority of his former appointees, some national executives and all the ten Regional Chairmen have openly endorsed him to lead the party.

The NDC party will have its Presidential Primaries in November this year, 2018 to elect its Presidential Candidate for the 2020 general elections.

The ‘Unity Walk’ is under the theme, “Mobilisation of the grassroots, a shared responsibility”.

The ‘Unity Walk’ forms part of recommendations made by the Prof. Kwesi Botchwey committee after the party suffering a humiliating defeat in the general elections held on December 7, 2016 at the hands of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

At the recent edition of the ‘Unity Walk’ held in Somanya, former President John Mahama said a number of reforms being carried out by the are part of initiatives to implement recommendations made by the Prof. Kwesi Botchwey committee.

The other presidential hopefuls such as Mr. Sylvester Mensah, Mr. Stephen Atubiga, Hon Albert Abban Bagbin, Dr. Ekow Spio Garbrah, Prof Joshua Alabi among others missed in actions in Somenya’s Unity Walk and it is likely the same thing will happen in Wa.

Already there have been concerns that the project maybe further dividing the party as supporters of some persons who have expressed the intent to contest the flag bearer slot are unhappy at attempts by the leadership to project former President John Mahama above other aspirants and notably is Mr. Albert Abban Bagbin.

The party has been already organised same in Tamale, Cape Coast, Accra, Tarkwa and Techiman in the Northern, Central, Greater Accra and Techiman, Somanya were attended by thousands of party members.
